With the pandemic in full swing, all the uncertainty is weighing heavily on all of us. Now that everyone is stuck at home, it’s more important than ever to create a warm, inviting space for you and your loved ones. Romantic outdoor lighting is a great way to create a charming environment and maintain the magic in your relationships. Our designers will explain how to design romantic outdoor lighting the right way.

Color Temperature

When making an outdoor lighting design, color temperature is crucial for mood lighting. You can express a lot and set the tone for an evening by playing around with it. The temperature affects the shade a light emits and ranges from 2,200K(warm) to 5,500K(cool). Warm lighting is often preferred by homeowners because of it’s calming, flattering nature. Warm lighting is used by designers to create romantic, intimate outdoor settings. Cool light can also be used for romantic outdoor lighting. It is especially popular with those who favor moonlights.

Moonlighting

Moonlight registers as cool lighting on the temperature scale. Moonlighting is used by professionals to recreate the natural glow of the moonlight. It is done by installing a fixture in a tree or other elevated surface. The fixture is then angled downward, and if it is in a tree, positioned between branches so that the light can filter through them just like moonlight would. Many residential clients love moonlighting because it adds an ethereal, mystical mood to their property. Clients also love dramatic styles created with uplighting.

Silhouetting

Silhouetting is accomplished through the use of uplights. By placing a discreet fixture in the ground behind an object, facing a flat surface, a silhouette shape comes to the foreground. The shadowed object or feature is cast in front of a soft, halo like glow. Silhouetting can highlight gorgeous shapes on your property. It can create a romantic, organic environment that plays up the already beautiful features in your yard.

Shadowing

Shadow lighting is created when landscape lighting professionals place a light in front of a feature such as a water fountain, statue or tree. The fixture is pleased at the base of the object angled upward. This technique is used to cast a shadow on a flat surface behind the object. This method can capture a lot of movement in the shadows from foliage blowing in the wind to trees shaking their branches. The effect can be mesmerizing, and very enchanting.
